Over 300 professional riders from throughout the UK and Europe entertained thousands of enthusiastic spectators yesterday as they hurtled round a gruelling course that ended with a climb up the cobbles of Michaelgate.

The very first women’s race in the Lincoln Grand Cycling Prix turned into a victory parade for the Drops Cycling team after they clinched the top three positions with winner Alice Barnes scooping the top prize of £1,000.

The men’s race turned out to be a fiercely fought battle over the 103 mile course with Tom Stewart, representing Madison Genesis speeding past four times winner Russell Downing on the very last corner to take the number one spot on the podium.

Organiser Dan Elmore said: “The event went really smoothly. Lots of people came out to support the riders.

” We love having this kind of atmosphere.”
