Walking football: a slower version of the beautiful game

Sir Stanley Mathews was still dazzling defenders in the top flight when he was 50.

Footballers over that age can now re-live their youth, put their boots back on and dream they are on a hat-trick at Wembley all because of a game called ‘Walking Football’.

The laws of the game are very simple. Any player caught running either on or off the ball concedes a free kick to the opposition.

It is a way for seniors to return to the game they probably left in their mid-thirties. However there are now opportunities to take part in one of the fastest growing sports for older people in the UK.
