Let’s not speculate about the future of Lincoln United boss, Dave Frecklington. Let’s instead examine what he has achieved at Ashby Avenue over the last three years.

When I first started reporting on the Whites at the start of the 2013-14 season I was writing about a club that was struggling.

Attendances were well below the hundred mark and the team lacked direction.

The one big positive however was the enthusiasm and spirit displayed by the board, the backroom staff and everyone involved in running the club.

When Dave Frecklington became boss he harnessed that spirit and enthusiasm and instilled a sense of pride and loyalty in both supporters and players alike.

But how does a turnaround like that happen? It certainly doesn’t come about overnight.

In his first year in charge the new Whites boss focused on building a side capable of staying in the league.

It was a tough first season as the team flirted with relegation for most of that campaign.

In August 2014 there was something of a revolution in the style of football the Whites began to play. Frecklington introduced a footballing philosophy which included keeping the ball on the deck and playing it out from the back. Long gone were the days of ‘boot and hope’.

The system worked . It was the Whites’ highest finish in the league for a decade.

The 2015-16 campaign saw Dave Frecklington’s men reach fifth position in the table and a spot in the play-offs. A narrow defeat at Shaw Lane Aquaforce brought the campaign to an end.

Once again the question must be asked: how do you raise a struggling club to the heights of the play-offs in only three seasons?

It must go down to leadership. Dave Frecklington and his faithful management team have been inspirational.

The ‘Gaffer’ has shown ruthlessness when necessary. Everyone knows he is the boss. Everyone knows what he says goes. Everyone has faith in what he does.

That is why Lincoln United is one of the most respected and most popular clubs in the region.

In football parlance: ” The boy done well.” And that is the biggest understatement you are ever likely to hear.
