Goals Galore at Sun Hat Villas as Whites Storm to Victory

Lincoln United treated the Ashby Avenue faithful to a goal fest yesterday when they hammered Corby Town 5-2 to rocket up to eighth place in the Evo-Stik South League, just seven points outside the play-offs.
From the opening minute Sam Wilkinson’s men showed their intent when Corby had to scramble the ball off the line.
Six minutes’ later another defensive mix-up in the visitors’ box enabled Charlie Ward to strike home the first goal.
United continued to dominate for the next 15 minutes as Corby struggled to get out of the starting blocks.
However, the visitors did begin to cause one or two problems as the match went on and pressurised the home side at times.
United could have doubled the lead five minutes before the break when Grimes was denied by the legs of Corby keeper Smith.
The second half started with United exerting immediate pressure on the opposition and a Wright header from a Whitewick corner after 50 minutes doubled the lead.
Matt Cotton joined in the fun two minutes’ later with a curling left foot shot which found the top corner of the Corby net.
Ten minutes’ later, fellow striker Paul Grimes found himself one on one with the young Corby stopper and this time made no mistake to give his side a 4-0 lead.
The visitors looked down and out at this stage although they were given a glimmer of hope when Jamie Anton scored after what looked like an infringement on keeper McGann following a corner.
Phil Watt put the home crowd at ease when he made it 5-1 from yet another Whitewick corner.
Corby had the consolation of scoring the best goal of the game when Jordan Crawford hit a sweet left footer beyond the reach of Whites’ keeper McGann but by that time it was far too late to worry the Whites.
This was an excellent all-round performance which saw Sam Wilkinson’s men play with confidence and free-flowing football.
More important was the fact they were completely ruthless in front of goal.
