Excellent team effort by Whites not enough to avoid defeat

Lincoln United lost their first home game of 2018, 1-0 to Stamford, in front of a good crowd in a match where they could have gained at least one point.

The Whites kept the same team as last Saturday and started the game brightly with Scott Matthews making a number of marauding runs down the left.

It took the visitors around 20 minutes to get a foothold in the game and but for the heroics of McGann in goal behind a strong back three, Sam Wilkinson’s men could have gone into half time at least one goal behind.

After the break, United came out all guns blazing and immediately started to dominate possession.

Jack McGovern’s glancing effort hit the post whilst Matt Cotton’s trickery was beginning to strike panic in the Stamford defence.

However, it was the visitors who scored the only goal of the encounter in the 66th minute when a quick break caught the Whites’ midfield too far up the pitch, leaving the defence outnumbered.

Stamford took advantage of this lapse and scored through full back Eliot Putman who formed part of the four man breakaway.

The Ashby Avenue faithful were treated to an exciting second half display by their team who couldn’t break through a very stubborn Stamford back five.

Toyne and Oliver were sent on but couldn’t find the spark to level the score-line.

It was an excellent game for both sets of spectators and both sides deserve praise for playing some really good football on what was a difficult surface.

Although there was naturally disappointment with the result, United should be pleased with their performance.

Stamford are a very good team and seized their chance when it arose.

Man of the match: Scott Matthews

Next up, Leek Town away on Saturday, 13th January.
