Lincoln United put on a display of superb, attacking football for the Ashby Avenue faithful yesterday as they completely overwhelmed Belper Town 8-1 .
Ironically it was the visitors who took the lead in the ninth minute when striker Jahvan Davidson Miller beat the offside trap and slotted home the first goal of the afternoon.
It was downhill all the way for his team after that as Sam Wilkinson’s men took full control of proceedings and dominated every area of the pitch.
In the eleventh minute Matt Cotton cut inside from the left and stroked the ball past the Belper keeper to equalise for United.
Five minutes later Jack Wightwick hammered home an unstoppable strike from 20 yards to give his side the lead.
On the half hour, an excellent run by Jack McGovern ended with Cotton grabbing his second to make it 3-1.
It was one-way traffic as United out-muscled and overpowered their opponents.
In the 37th minute James Blunden rose majestically to nod home a Rob Norris corner.
Hard-working front man Paul Grimes joined the party soon after with a swift turn and shot from a tight angle that made the score heading into half-time 5-1.
After an initial rally, Belper were soon pegged back as wing back Scott Matthews made it six following selfless work from McGovern.
Belper had no answer to the marauding raids of the Whites and it was no surprise that Jack Wightwick made it 7-1 in the 75th minute after great work down the right from Luke Hornsey.
Ten minutes later Rob Norris jinked his way through the Belper defence to complete the rout.
The result rockets the Whites up to eleventh place in the league on 30 points.
It was a storming performance and a great team effort.
Man of the Match: Jack McGovern
Next up: Carlton Town away on New Year’s Day.
