Lincoln United put on a fighting display in their 3-2 defeat against higher-league Grantham Town FC last night in the First Round of the Intergro Cup.
Boss Sam Wilkinson sent out his team in a 3-5-2 formation due to the absence of Phil Watt, Callum Ward, James Blunden and new signing Charlie Ward through injury.
Kane Hutchinson-Wilkes took over in goal with youngsters, Sam Mcullough and Oliver Bean on the bench.
The Whites took the lead after 15 minutes when a delightful through ball from Luke Hornsey found striker Jack McGovern who hooked the ball over the advancing Grantham keeper.
The hosts equalised seven minutes later when Curtis Burrows placed his strike beyond the young United keeper.
Former Whites’ striker, Jordan Hempenstall then gave the Gingerbreads the lead with a clinical header.
Hempenstall made it 3-1 after half time with a clever turn and finish that are his trademarks.
Midfielder Andy Toyne pulled one back on 71 minutes but despite concerted efforts, United could not grab an equaliser.
Their best chance fell to young Mcullogh who ballooned the ball over from five yards.
It was, however, a better all-round effort from a squad ravaged by injuries and it was only the class of Hempenstall that separated the two sides.
This Saturday the Whites return to league action when they welcome Leek Town to the Sun Hat Villas stadium kick off 3pm.
