Lincoln United’s inconsistent performances continued at Sheffield FC last night where they went down 3-2 after going in at half-time 2-1 to the good .

To make matters worse, skipper Phil Watt and fellow defender Callum Ward had to be replaced because of injuries.

The Whites’ however, started well enough and their first attempt on goal came after two minutes when Andy Toyne’s shot cannoned off a defender for a corner.

Sheffield were quick on the break and should have gone ahead after 15 minutes following a defensive mix-up in United’s defence.

In what was turning out to be an open, entertaining match, Sam Wilkinson’s team took the lead when Jack Wightwick’s mazy run ended with Matt Cotton firing home an excellent left-footer into the top corner of the Sheffield net.

Five minutes’ later, the home side equalised after the ball was threaded through to Joel Purkiss who was left in the clear to beat keeper Phil McGann.

United were then put under pressure until a Wightwick corner after 30 minutes was met majestically by Jack McGovern who headed home to give his side a 2-1 advantage going into the break.

The second half turned out to be somewhat of a disaster for the visitors. Callum Ward was replaced by James Blunden at the back and then Phil Watt had to go off injured leaving Luke Hornsey to come on and take his place.

The home side began to take control and equalised on 70 minutes with a left-footed screamer from substitute Matt Sykes.

Andrew Gascoigne then gave the hosts the lead with another 25 yard effort five minutes’ later.

Although United went close late on, it was a combination of injuries and disjointed play that led to the defeat.

Leek Town await on Saturday and Sam Wilkinson does not yet know how many changes will be needed to overcome the present injury crisis.
