COUNTLESS CHANCES BUT NO GOALS AT GOOLE

Lincoln United completed their pre-season fixtures with a 0-0 stalemate at Goole AFC this afternoon in a match where opportunities were created but not taken.

On a sunny and windy the Victoria Pleasure Ground, the Whites lined up with new captain Phil Watt taking over from Sean Wright who is side-lined for four weeks.

The visitors attacked from the start and looked especially dangerous with Callum Ward, Scott Matthews and danger man Matt Cotton causing havoc in the hosts’ defence.

Midfielder Andy Toyne was the creative force in Sam Wilkinson’s team which exhibited a blend of youth and experience.

The home side had two clear-cut chances but squandered both, hitting the post and firing wide but with Robinson combining effectively with Cotton, United always posed a threat on the break.

The second half turned into a scrappy affair as both teams succumbed to the mercy of the conditions.

The Whites kept a clean sheet and almost grabbed a winner through the wily know-how of substitute Sean Cann whose one thought, as ever, was to go direct and shoot for goal.

With points at stake, next week’s trip to Chasetown will provide the extra spark and motivation the Ashby Avenue outfit need in their quest to  start the new campaign with a win.
