In their fifth game of pre-season Gainsborough Trinity went down 1-0 to a strong Rotherham United unit at the Martin & Co arena last night.
A 35th minute goal by the Millers secured a deserved win.
However The Holy Blues battled hard throughout and boss Dave Frecklington would have been able to take a number of positives from the game.
The visitors looked dangerous on the break, particularly down the right flank.
The home defence was always on full alert to cope with the threats of the United strikers.
Rotherham dominated first half possession capped by the only goal 10 minutes from the break.
The League One outfit looked sharp after their recent training in Austria yet they would have left the Northolme knowing they had been tested.
Holy Blues’ boss Frecklington said: “There was a fantastic work ethic out there from the boys tonight against a strong Rotherham side.
“We kept our shape well and there were a lot of positives to take from the game.”
Striker Alex Simmons added: “We kept a really good shape. We stayed together throughout the game as a unit and limited their chances.”
Trinity are in action at home again on Thursday evening against Grantham Town in the semi-final of the Lincolnshire FA County Cup.
