Former Lincoln City ace, Alex Simmons scored twice and almost grabbed a third as his Gainsborough team overcame Lincoln City 4-1 in yesterday’s Lincolnshire FA County Cup quarter-final.
The winger was released by the Imps at the end of last season.
Holy Blues’ boss Dave Frecklington snapped him up and the 21-year-old is now striving for success in the National League North.
Simmons said: “It was a bit of a strange feeling playing against my old club.
“You’ve got to go out there and put up a good performance and I thought we did that.
“We kept the ball, worked hard for each other and generally played well as a team.
“We gained a lot from seeing a lot of the ball and getting used to each other playing.
“It was a really good day for us.
“The first goal, Ashley(Worsfold) slipped it into me. I took it on my right and whipped it in.
“I was glad to get a goal nice and early.
“When we had the ball we were shifting it so they had to work twice as hard as us.
“For the second goal I thought I would put it in a good area near the back post. It was probably not my best goal but it was probably my best bad one!
“The spirit is good . Obviously there’s a lot of new lads and it’s going to take time to gel but we are starting to get used to each other and learning how we all play.
“Training has been intense and now we are getting into the football.
“We are really looking forward to the new season.”
