Gainsborough Trinity progressed to the semi-final of the Lincolnshire FA Senior Cup following their 4-1 defeat of Lincoln City represented today by the Academy outfit.

Dve Frecklington’s men displayed the necessary strength and experience to overcome the Sincil Bank youngsters  who were standing in for the senior squad who are training in Portugal.

When reports reach Danny Cowley he will be proud of the way his 16-18 year-olds performed against a very impressive Holy Blues side.

It was former Lincoln City man, Alex Simmons who opened the scoring with a well-struck effort after only five minutes.

Local favourite Ashley Worsfold doubled the score with a penalty after Tom Davie had been sent sprawling in the box.

The first half was completely dominated by the home side whose midfield maestro Jonathan Williams ran the show.

The Imps’ youngsters manage to pull one back on 75 minutes through Watkinson after a goalmouth scramble.

However after 80 minutes it was that man again, Alex Simmons whose 25 yard free kick slipped through the clutches of the Imps’ keeper to make it 3-1.

Wiles hit a fourth on full time to give Trinity a 4-1 comfortable victory.

Boss Dave Frecklington said: “Lincoln City Youth Team didn’t shirk out of anything this afternoon.

“They put their hearts and souls into the game.

“What a learning curve it was for their development.

“For us, winning breeds confidence and we want that winning mentality.

“We are getting to that situation now where we know what our strongest side is likely to be.

“Players are having to step up  are now staking a claim to be in that starting line-up.

“We are getting somewhere near now and giving players game time so we can peak come August 5th.”
