Lincoln United welcomed Danny Cowley’s Lincoln City to the Sun Hat Villas stadium yesterday in what was labelled ‘A Celebration of Football in Lincoln’.
A record-breaking attendance of around 1,700 loyal fans from both teams crammed into the Ashby Avenue ground to watch their heroes in action for the first time this season.
It was one of those rare events when the football played second fiddle to the occasion.
The crowd basked in the beautiful summer sunshine eager to cast an eye over new signings, trialists and of course, established star names.
They weren’t disappointed.
Danny Cowley’s men began where they left off in April after their epic season where suddenly they became the nation’s second team following their FA Cup heroics.
The Imps ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over a Whites’ outfit that never stopped fighting for every ball.
The Lincoln United faithful can hold their heads high and be proud of the effort and determination displayed by their team.
Off the pitch, it was carnival time.
Onions sizzled on the barbecues giving off an aroma that literally led you to the source of the griddle.
Supporters at touch-line level marvelled at the speed of the players and realised from their vantage point how slow the beautiful game looks on television.
The success of the day was brought about by the effort and determination of Lincoln United’s troop of volunteers.
Without them there would have been no game.
Everyone left the ground knowing they had enjoyed their afternoon at one of the best local community football clubs in the region.
