Lincoln City put their faithful fans through momentary agony at Sincil Bank this afternoon after clawing their way back from a 1-0 deficit to overcome Macclesfield 2-1 thanks to a brace from midfield ace Terry Hawkridge.
The visitors had a wonderful opportunity to level the match at the death but scorned the chance when scoring would have been the easier option.
A sell-out crowd experienced the full range of emotions even before the match with a mixture of tension, high expectation and anticipation filling the air.
Nerves started to jangle when Macclesfield took the lead after space suddenly appeared for their striker to place his shot beyond the reach of Paul Farman.
However one thing we have learned about Danny Cowley’s men, particularly over the last two matches, is that they don’t give up.
Macclesfield are a good side and their keeper was in top form but when he could only parry a shot away, there was Terry Hawkridge to slot the ball home.
Hawkridge then continued his heroics with a second goal to give the Imps the lead and eventually the title.
It was nerve-wracking stuff.
The scenes at the final whistle were joyous.
Danny and Nicky Cowley’s men have given the people of Lincoln the first of what is probably many tastes of success.
