After one of their most successful seasons for years Lincoln United’s fight for promotion came to an end when they went down 3-2 at Shaw lane Aquaforce last night.
A spirited comeback in the last five minutes came just too late after the Whites pulled back two goals to make the home crowd extremely nervous as an unlikely equaliser suddenly became a reality.
However the visitors could not snatch a third goal leaving the Barnsley outfit to host Coalville Town in Saturday’s play-off final.
The match was played in sleet and snow. First half chances went begging at both ends with the Ashby Avenue outfit looking extremely dangerous on the break.
Aquaforce increased the pressure in the second half and went 3-0 up after two strikes from James Walshaw and a third from substitute Adam Priestley.
However a Jack McGovern header followed by a Rob Norris lob in the 89th and 90th minute respectively gave hope to the travelling Whites’ fans and provided the home support a real scare.
The last few minutes personified the spirit and pride displayed all season by Dave Frecklington’s men.
The Whites gave everything but it was not quite enough. After a long campaign which included the highest points tally for years the management and players can now look forward to a well-deserved break.
