Lincoln United bounced back to beat Gresley 3-1 on Saturday after their 7-2 defeat at Kidsgrove Athletic on Tuesday.

SportsLinc caught up with Whites’ boss Sam Wilkinson to get his thoughts on the game.

He said: “Saturday was a big win especially after Tuesday night’s heavy defeat.

“It wasn’t a vintage performance by any means and we did have a little bit of luck but I thought we earned it by defending like we did.

“The back five were exceptional. The midfield and strikers worked tirelessly to protect our goal and our lead.

“It wasn’t a great football match because the pitch was awful so we had to change the way we play by turning them around and playing in the final third.

“The first goal was a touch of class from Conner Robinson to give himself a yard and get his shot off after good work from Kallum Smith.

“The second was down to desire from Josh Nichol who chased a lost cause.

“The keeper smashed the ball against him to leave Josh the simple task of tapping the ball home.

“We were comfortable up until they scored and then we had to be at our best defensively to go into half-time 2-1 up.

“We started brightly after the break and had a few set pieces which went close.

“We then had to defend well which we did by throwing our bodies on the line to block shots and cover for each other with intelligence and determination.

“To stick at it after Tuesday night showed a lot about this very young back line.

“When we got the third from Matt Cotton it was a great relief. It was a class goal with Matt ¬†twisting and turning to smash it into the bottom corner.

“Taking everything into consideration after the horror night on Tuesday and the pitch at Gresley it was a great result.

“We now have to back it up tomorrow night at home against Loughborough which is a must-win game.”
