Third XV Match Report
Ashworth double unable to prevent defeat
LINCOLN 3RD XV 18
EAST RETFORD 2ND XV 28
BY JOSEPH VERNEY
An excellent try-scoring display from Mitch Ashworth was not enough to prevent Lincoln’s 3rd XV from going down to a 28-18 defeat against East Retford.
Charles Osei also got on the score sheet with his first try for the club, while Brad Nixon added a penalty.
Club Stalwart Paul Clarke rolled back the years to step in and help the third team with a 15-minute spell at fly-half.
Nixon’s penalty and Ashworth’s show-and-go try from a ruck saw Lincoln score eight points in the first half.
Osei added to the score in the second half after being given a penalty try when he was stopped by a high tackle a couple of inches short of the line.
Lincoln continued to battle hard and scored their third of the afternoon when Ashworth took advantage of a scuffed clearance kick by the visitors to run in for a try.
After the match co-captain Adam Kelleher said: “It was a tremendous all-round effort but not moving the ball cost us.
“Even though he received a harsh yellow card Mitch came back on and gave an excellent mature performance to lift team.”
