Following their 3-1 win over Rugby Town Lincoln United guaranteed a place in the Evo-Stik Division One (South) League play-offs tonight in front of a triumphant home crowd at the Sun Hat Villas stadium.
Goals from defender Jake Gibson, striker Matt Cotton and midfielder Danny Brooks ensured a top five finish after Dave Frecklington’s men made it four wins on the bounce.
The home side made a nervy start and it was the visitors who took a deserved lead when Rugby’s Mitch Piggon capitalised on a defensive mix up to put his side one up after 17 minutes.
The home team rallied and when a Danny Brooks free kick found skipper Michael Jacklin , Jake Gibson was on hand to prod the ball home for the equaliser.
Five minutes before the break it was that man Brooks again who hit a beautiful first time pass to Gary King on the left who crossed for Matt Cotton to sweep the ball home and make it 2-1.
The Ashby Avenue outfit took further control after half time and when Matt Cotton broke down the left he was up-ended in the area by Rugby’s Josh Willis leaving Brooks to smash home the resulting penalty.
The home supporters later heard that close rivals Chasetown FC were beaten 1-0 by Stocksbridge Steels care of a goal from former Whites striker Scott Ruthven and the celebrations began.
Boss Dave Frecklington said: “The lads were outstanding tonight. They deserve their place in the play-offs.
“We have been planning this for three years. I am a really proud man.
The team showed quality and energy and manged to see off the opposition.
“We can now really enjoy Saturday’s match against Chasetown and then prepare for the play-offs.”
