Lincoln City have only one recognised, match-fit centre half to face Oldham Athletic in next Monday’s FA Cup second round tie at Sincil Bank.

Sean Raggett saw red in last night’s 1-0 win over Wrexham and subject to appeal he is likely to miss the next three games.

Callum Howe, who has deputised so magnificently in central defence is cup-tied having played for Southport in the world’s most famous cup competition.

So what are the alternatives?

First off Danny Cowley could bring someone in on loan if that someone is available.

There is a big problem with this. How can you expect a new player to slot straight into a side?

The other issue with changing personnel is upsetting the status quo. Short-term change does not always bring long term gain. Look at the Tom Champion situation.

I have a cunning plan.

Remember when Manchester United were devoid of central defenders a few seasons back? They readjusted the team formation by making Michael Carrick centre back and Darren Fletcher sweeper.

It worked in the short term which was all that was necessary until the more recognised back four returned from either injury or suspension.

I propose a similar tactic for the Imps.

It may look drastic at first glance but mull over the idea before making up your mind.

Let Luke Waterfall dominate the defence with his head and have young Elliott Whitehouse sweeping up everything the skipper may miss.

Replace Elliott in midfield with Alan Power.

That way you keep the same personnel and formation with a minor readjustment at the back.

What do you think?
