SportsLinc caught up with a very happy Lincoln United boss, Sam Wilkinson after last night’s 2-0 drubbing of AFC Rushden and Diamonds in the FA Trophy.
Q. Sam, what a performance.
A. ” It was a brilliant result and a brilliant performance especially in the first half which I thought we totally dominated.
“It could have been more in the end but we’re happy with the overall performance and obviously the result.”
Q. Your style of play didn’t allow them to get into the game.
A. When we play a high-intensity game we are a really good side but when we take our foot off the gas a little bit we become a bit average.
“We drill it into the lads to work really hard and play with a high tempo.
“The first goal proved that when Callum Ward took a quick throw and Kallum Smith ran off and scored.
“There are not many teams that can live with us if we play to our best and that’s what we keep telling the lads.”
Q. It looked like a good all round performance.
A. “It was but special mention must go to our two centre halves James Blunden and Michael Jacklin who were superb.
“They must have headed every ball tonight.
“It makes such a difference because it gives Danny Brooks and Andy Toyne a better chance to win the second balls in midfield which they did tonight, especially in the first half.
“Even though we weren’t at our best in the second half we should still have probably won by three or four.”
Q That was quite a goal from Kallum Smith
A. Kallums’s goal looked good from where I was standing but he said it took a deflection which takes the gloss off it a little bit.
“I was really pleased for Kallum. He likes to play left midfield and likes to get on and score goals.
“It would have been nice for him to get his hat trick near the end but it wasn’t to be.”
Q You must be pleased with your squad.
A. The starting eleven are always looking over their shoulders and know that people are coming back after injury.
“They know if they are doing the business they will keep the shirt.
“We have a strong squad and I am really pleased with it.”
Q Back to the league on Saturday?
A. “We need to sort out our league form and I am sure we will do that.
“The next couple of months are going to be hectic but we believe we have a squad to cope with the cup games and hopefully push on in the league as well.”
ALWAYS LOOK ON THE WHITE SIDE OF LIFE
