VICTORY FOR THE WHITES: THE THOUGHTS OF BIG SAM WILKINSON

Lincoln United marched into the third round qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup yesterday after dispensing with National League North side Nuneaton Town 2-1.

Goals from Jack McGovern and Matt Cotton were enough to see the Whites safely through although not before a Nuneaton goal made the match slightly uncomfortable for the visitors’ supporters for the last 20 minutes.

Naturally Whites’ boss Sam Wilkinson was delighted with the result. He talked exclusively to Sportslinc this morning about the game.

He said: “It was an unbelievable performance and shift from the lads.

“I would like to know how far some of them ran because they were out on their feet after the game.

“We had a game plan to stop them from playing and aimed to frustrate them by keeping our shape and pressing them when we could.

“This proved very difficult as they passed the ball so well and tried to pull us about.

“But we were strong and limited them to only a couple of chances in the first half.

“We defended superbly, throwing bodies in the way of anything they threw at us.

“Yet going the other way we should have come in at half-time two maybe three nil up.

“All our chances came from breaks but you would expect that against full-time opposition.

“We should have had a stone-wall penalty before Jack McGovern scored a screamer. Then we hit the bar.

“The second half was backs to-the-wall but we said to the players at half-time to score another and be brave and positive.

“It was hard to break out but when we did Luke Hornsey found Sam Mullarkey with a great ball over the top.

“Sam held off the defender superbly, back-heeled it to Matt Cotton whose first shot was saved but there was no mistake with his second.

“That really gave us something to hold on to.

“We rode our luck at times. They hit the bar and post.

“But we thoroughly deserved our bit of luck because of the way we defended.

“Every one of our players was in a different class.”

SportsLinc will let you know tomorrow afternoon who the Whites will face in the next round.
