SportsLinc asked strength and conditioning expert Sam Vickers to explain the popularity of foam rolling and how it can benefit your training. He explains everything in his article below.
“Foam rolling has become a common tool within the modern fitness industry and yet few athletes or coaches truly understand the importance of the method.
“Perhaps the term ‘foam rolling’ itself is misleading . On paper using a foam roller is perhaps self-explanatory: roll a foam tube over a tight or sore spot on a muscle to help relieve tightness.
“When your muscle knots and tightness start to ease over time the tension applied by a foam roller may become minimal and you will stop feeling the benefits.
“Once you have achieved this level other tools should be applied such as a tennis or hockey ball.”
