When Danny Cowley was appointed boss of Lincoln City in the summer he and his brother Nicky introduced a completely new fitness regime for the players.

Elements of sports science were brought into a programme made up of strength and conditioning work aimed at enabling the squad to play a hyper-mobile and high-energy game.

Danny told SportsLinc: “When we have Saturday to Saturday matches, Tuesday is always our most intensive training day.

“The boys are in from 9.00 am and we then train on grass between 10.00-12.30 focusing on fitness along with some tactical elements.

“We got back from Torquay at 3.00am on Sunday so we allowed the boys to recover independently at home though they still had to send in the pictures of their recovery training to our sports scientist.

“This keeps everyone honest as we always believe in the team being first.

“It also keeps everyone professional.

“On Monday we analysed Saturday’s game for 80 minutes followed by some lower intensity work on the 3G.

“Monday afternoon was spent at Lincoln College on the bikes and foam rollers followed by a recovery session in the hydrotherapy pool.

“We really appreciate being able to use the facilities there.

“We work very hard on our fitness.

“The boys have bought into it and credit to them for doing so.

“It’s nice to know that you are stronger than your opponents in the last 15 minutes of a game.

“Take Matt Rhead on Saturday. He was defending in his own box then got on the end of Terry Hawkridge’s cross in their box to win the game for us.

“All credit to Matt but it is a collective effort.

We play a hyper-mobile, high-energy game and we have to be fit for that and therefore we work very hard on our fitness.”
