Lincoln United took a step nearer to securing a place in the play-offs following their 1-0 win over Basford United at the Sun Hat Villas stadium last night.
It took an 89th minute header from defender Sean Wright to settle the issue with a victory that leaves the Whites four points ahead of sixth-placed Chasetown and with games in hand over most of their play-off rivals.
The victory was even more impressive as the home side lost Jordan Lemon after 75 minutes following his second yellow card added to the fact that the visitors were unbeaten in 2016 until last night.
Dave Frecklington’s men were without injured keeper Richard Walton so the experienced Mario Ziccardi returned. Danny Brooks came into midfield for Andrew Toyne.
The first half started very lively with the Ashby Avenue outft dominating the play in all areas. Basford held on without conceding thanks to some desperate defending at times that kept the scoresheet blank.
After the break the visitors upped their game and when Jordan Lemon saw red it looked likely they would turn pressure into goals.
However a minute from time a Rob Norris corner was headed home by Sean Wright to complete a magnificent victory although not before man-of-the -match Kallum Smith saved his side with a goal-line clearance.
This was a victory to savour and Dave Frecklington’s men can look to continue their unbeaten run of six matches when they visit Market Drayton Town on Saturday.
